Sunset at the Lake by Zeitwolf Sunset at the Lake by Zeitwolf
This is my first HDR image... and honestly I never thought, HDR would be any good, but it it earned my respect, now. XD

It's funny. I didn't even know Photoshop could help me with it, yes even do the HDR... ignorant me. Then I experienced several problems with the image. Since I didn't take it with tripod I only had this one exposure. I made some steps/brackets in Camera Raw, but Photoshop couldn't see enough dynamic range, so I had to trick it. I'm such a genious, hehe. After I menaged that problem, it seemed my computer didn't have enough memory to process seven 16-bit images... and so on... at last I got my image. And it's looking fine. Not perfect, but perfectly ok for my first HDR.

Anyone still awake after this rant?
I was at the Guelper lake for some time last week. Saw two immensly beautiful sunsets. Had my camera with me, with the 28-200, which is actually too old for my cam, thus I need to tape the contacts to take photos at all, but at least I got zoom... and I tried to take some photos of the pretty sky with the sanguine red sun and landscape. But all I got was either totally black silhouettes of the trees and ground with a reddish sun or a nicely lit landscape with a totally overexposed white sun... which was both not, what my eyes saw, or what my brain calculated of the lighting situation, as some of you might chip in.

I even made a colour sketch on my DS Lite to remember the conditions: [link] Make sure to check it out.

So, back at home I was, of course, very disappointed of what I captured on the cmos. And today, I thougt of giving it a try. I always hateloved HDR, because some photographs are so beautiful with it. I don't know, if he's using HDR, but Nate Zeman's landscape photographs are just perfectly lit for an instance (if he's using it, than I'd say, it's the right way to use it). On the other hand you see so much awful stuff with 'aura' around the darker areas, like it was cheaply made with 'Shadow/Highlights'... A good Post Production should be as if there was no Post Production... imho...

So finally, after more than an hour of hard work, ehehe, here is my first HDR (did I mention that before?).

Anyway, the days at the lake were very nice. It is an important lake in the Ramsar Convention for Wetlands and thousands of migratory birds are resting there two times in a year. The birds on the photo are mostly grey geese, but the cranes and the great egrets were very impressing, too. The large animals on the grass are galloway cattle which are used to maintain the grassy look of the landscape which would else be overgrown by thick oak forest otherwise.
